John Ingleby
John Ingleby, né en 1749 et mort en 1808, est un peintre britannique d'origine galloise dont la spécialité est le travail sur de petites dimensions et les paysages.

Biographie
modifierLa famille de John Ingleby est originaire des Cornouailles qu'elle quitte pour s'établir au Flintshire où elle ouvre une mine (ou une fonderie) de plomb.
John Ingleby naît à Halkyn en 1749 de Hugh Ingleby et de Ann Davies, et passe toute sa jeunesse dans ce village. Il fait partie d'une fratrie de dix frères et sœurs[1].
John Ingleby meurt en 1808[2] et, lors de l'inscription du décès de l'artiste dans les registres paroissiaux, son métier renseigné est enlumineur. Il semble donc que John Ingleby était un artisan qui possédait un atelier dont la spécialité était la peinture d’œuvres de petite dimension. Il a notamment peint des aquarelles commandées par le naturaliste et amateur d'antiquités Thomas Pennant.
La période de 1810-1815 est très déprimante dans l'industrie du plomb dans le Flintshire et en 1812, quatre ans après la mort du peintre, l'entreprise familiale se déclare en faillite[3].
Postérité
modifierLa Bibliothèque nationale du pays de Galles conserve une riche collection d'aquarelles représentant des paysages du North Wales (Galles du Nord), peintes par John Ingleby[4],[5],[6].
