Port antique

Dear user you have been adding the link ancientportsantiques.com to a fair number of articles. It appears that you have a conflict of interest in placing this link on both french and english wikipedia. I would like to point you to the guidelines on external links on fr:Wikipédia:Liens externes and en:Wikipedia:External links. If suggest you discuss the placement of this link before adding it to wikipedia again. If you continue to place the link it might be seen as spamming and the link could be blacklisted. I am not saying the site is not useful or relevant, I am just asking you to consider placing the link carefully in order to avoid the suggestion of spam on wikipedia. Thank you. Please believe me that I hate spam and I would hate to be accused of spamming. So I am ready to listen to your advice and I read Wikipedia's guidelines. However, please check the link I wish to introduce by yourself: www.ancientportsantiques.com is a highly specialized site about ancient ports and I wish to link to it at least on the French site "Liste des ports antiques" which I have been working on for several years! I spent 2000 hours on a new list that covers more than 50 A4 pages and is therfore too large to put on Wikipedia. It is however the most comprehensive list available today. As I also wish to make this information know to en.Wikipedia, and as I could not find an "ancient ports" page, I thought it would be wise to add the link on the pages concerned with Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and ancient Greece, ancient Rome. I did not expect that around 6 links scattered on en.wikipedia and fr.wikipedia would sound like spamming! But ok you decide! Once again have a look at this web site: it is really factual and not selling anything. It is just a lot of information given away for free. Questions: do you accept the link on Liste des ports antiques? On which English page do you suggest I put the link? Met vr gr. http://fr.wiki.x.io/wiki/Discussion_utilisateur:Artreve
I have not accused you of spamming. I did say there may be a conflict op interest. These additions have been detected automatically by COIbot and I have investigated that report. If you were spamming the link would have been blacklisted globally, which it hasn't. You have placed at least 15 links, according to the COIbot report. It appears these links have been removed by me and at least one other user. I have no problem with the placement of the link in a single article. The site certainly is relevant and seems to use reliable information although I have some suggestions you might find helpful:
  • Please read to local guidelines on external links to get a feel for this matter
  • While your site seems relevant, so are many other sites. Wikipedia is not a collection of links. There must be a good reason why your link should be included.
  • I suggest you discuss the placement of the link first with the local users.
  • You can use the link as a reference (if the link actually points to a certain page on the site instead of the home page), that is the best way to go if you ask me
  • You could start the english page en:ancient ports, you certainly seem knowledgeable enough.
If you need any help or assistance please let me know. EdBever (overleg) 30 sep 2011 12:46 (CEST)
Thanks a lot Ed for this valuable info. I am not that professional on Wikipedia and I needed this advice. I am surprised about the number of 15 links, surely I did not do that myself!. But nevermind, I'll restore the link ONLY on the French "Liste des ports antiques" as this is the page closest to that link. Concerning an English page "Ancient ports" I would love that! I suggest somebody translates the French page http://fr.wiki.x.io/wiki/Port_antique which is a good page. My English is not sufficient to do this but I'll be more than happy to review after a first translation is done. Met vr gr. http://fr.wiki.x.io/wiki/Discussion_utilisateur:Artreve
